1
Split up the core elements of your original song into separate audio files. You will usually want to isolate the vocal track, bass, and maybe the guitar track depending on how you envision your new arrangement. In a remix you will usually not use the original drum tracks. WAV or AIFF format is the best choice when outputting your files.

Plan your new mix. How do you envision your remix? Do you want techno drums? Do you want to loop only a specific section of the original vocals? How about adding a crazy new effect to the original guitar track? The possibilities are endless.

3
Program a drum beat. The easiest way to start building your remix is to begin with a new drum beat. You can build your remix around the new beat.
-
4
Add your vocal. Throw your vocal file into the mix. Listen to how the feel is changed by putting your vocal up against the new beat. This new feel should start to help you envision what direction you want to take your remix.

5
Add new sounds. Now you can start really adding character to your mix. Try adding some synths and some sounds that are totally different from your original recording. Experiment until you have something completely fresh and new!
