A popular draw game that has been known since about 1120 AD, domino sets and rules have undergone subtle changes as the game’s popularity spread from China to India, and from there to Europe and eventually the Americas. Even as today the draw game is still the most commonly played form, a plethora of variations exist. Learning how to play variations of dominoes is easy and a lot of fun! Here are the rules for the two most popular ones: 42 and Concentration.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Standard Set of Double Six Dominoes
  • Pencil & Scoring Pad
  • Table & Chairs
  • Sufficient number of players for each variation

Playing Dominoes Variation Known As “42”

  1. Step 1

Assemble four players to participate in this variation of dominoes.

  2. Step 2

Choose one of the players to be on your team. Sit across the table with your team member from the other team of two players.

  3. Step 3

Take domino pieces out of the box and place them face down onto the table. Shuffle well!

  4. Step 4

Draw seven domino pieces and let the other players take turns selecting their tiles. Let the player to the left of you--if you are the shuffler--open the bidding process and state the points he will attempt to win. 30 is the minimum bid and 42 is the maximum.

  5. Step 5

Open your game with a bid. Determine the trump and put down the first domino if you are the highest bidder.

  6. Step 6

Give a turn to the next player--in clockwise rotation--to now play her dominoes, attempting to follow the lead domino’s suit. Let all players take a turn. The player who cannot follow suit may use a trump piece. The competitor who placed the highest domino takes the round.

  7. Step 7

Repeat the process until either seven rounds are played, the high bidder arrives at the bid amount or his opponent surpasses the bid. The team that first scores seven wins is the overall champion.

  8. Playing Dominoes Variation Known As “Concentration”

  9. Step 1

Find another player and sit down facing each other across a table.

  10. Step 2

Remove the domino tiles from the box, place them face down onto the table, and shuffle them.

  11. Step 3

Arrange all 28 game pieces--keeping the dominoes face down--in four rows of seven dominoes each.

  12. Step 4

Turn over two dominoes in an effort to score a pair of game pieces that present as sum total value of 12.

  13. Step 5

Add the dominoes to your stack and take a second turn when you are successful meeting the objective.

  14. Step 6

Turn the tiles over again so only their backs are showing--when you are unsuccessful--and give your opponent a turn. The first player to reach 50 points wins.

Tips & Warnings
  • Your standard set of dominoes is the Double Six which contains 28 individual game pieces. If you substitute a Double Six with a Double Nine which contains 55 game pieces, adjust the scores needed for winning upward.
  • Do not change the scoring when using a Double Nine set if you include more players in the game than indicated in the rules. The increase in players offsets the increase in dominoes.
