How to Replace an Ink Cartridge in an HP Deskjet F340

Computers have become a way of life for both business and home use, and home printers have become the accessory of choice when it comes to adding time savings and functionality. For many home and small businesses, the HP Deskjet F340 provides all the high-level functionality they need in one cost-effective, integrated unit. But all printers run on ink, and sometimes you’ve got to replenish your supply. Fortunately, changing the ink cartridges in the F340 is a moderately easy process.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the ink levels by opening the HP Solution Center. Click on “Settings.” Click on “Toolbox.” Click on “Services.” Click on “Service this device.” Click on “Estimated Ink Levels.” A graphic will appear showing the estimated ink level in each cartridge.

    • 2

Verify that the unit is on. Open the print cartridge door allowing the print carriage to move to the far right side of the unit. Once the print carriage has stopped, lightly press down on a print cartridge to release it. Pull the print cartridge toward you out of its slot. To replace the tri-color print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the slot on the left. To replace the black or photo print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the slot on the right. Place the cartridge in a plastic bag as it may still contain some residual ink and may leak.

    • 3

Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging. Remove the plastic tape by using the pull tab, being careful to not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles under tape.

    • 4

Slide the new print cartridge forward into the empty slot. Gently push the upper part of the print cartridge until it clicks into place. The tri-color print cartridge fits into the left slot. The black or photo print cartridge fits into the right slot.

    • 5

Close the print cartridge door. If the print cartridge alignment sheet prints, load it on the left front corner of the scanner glass with the top of the page to the left. Verify that there is plain paper loaded in the input tray, and then press the “Scan” button to align the printer.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you use a refilled or re-manufactured print cartridge, the ink level indicator will be inaccurate or unavailable.

  • An ink cartridge might be running low even if the graphic shows that there is ink remaining. When the cartridges begin to run out of ink lines or streaks will always appear in printouts.

  • If you are removing the black print cartridge in order to install the photo print cartridge, store the black print cartridge in the print cartridge protector or an airtight plastic container.

  • The HP Inkjet Supplies Recycling Program is available in many countries/regions, and lets you recycle used print cartridges free of charge.

  • If the unit is off when you open the print cartridge door, the unit will not release the cartridges for changing. You could damage the unit if the print cartridges are not docked safely on the right side when you try to remove them.

  • Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Touching these parts may result in clogs, ink failure and bad electrical connections.
