Step 1
Clean your face. Wash your face with a mild facial cleanser, rinsing thoroughly. Make sure you have a clean, close shave, otherwise taking off the beard will be an unnecessarily painful experience. Use an astringent or non-alcohol based after shave balm to close your pores. If you use a product with alcohol in it, your skin will be overly dry. Using an after shave is important in closing the pores because this way the adhesive will stick better and longer. Apply a thin layer of non-oil based facial moisturizer to the areas that the beard will cover. If the layer of moisturizer is too thick, your face will be too damp for the hair to stick. Now it's time to put on the hair.

Step 2
Prepare the hair for attachment. A realistic fake beard is applied in layers. You will be applying small parcels of hair in layers, next to and on top of each other, until you fill the desired area of your face with hair wool. Mix two colors together when you prep the hair wool, one color that is your own, and one color that is slightly lighter. Separate the hair into small parcels, cut the ends of each on a diagonal bias, and lay in an undisturbed area with little or no draft.

Step 3
Apply the hair to your face. Think of your jaw as having three or four tiers running across, parallel to your lips and going down in succession to the bottom of your chin. Apply a tiny bit of spirit gum (a little goes a long, long way) to the underside of your chin, where the lowest tier would be. Take the first parcel of hair and stick the end that you cut on a bias to the center of this tier. Continue adding parcels of hair on this first tier until you have gone around both sides and there is an initial ridge of facial hair under your chin. Begin applying parcels of hair above the first tier on top of the chin, going around all the way, again, until your jaw line is covered. Continue going up in tiers until you reach the bottom of your lower lip. These parcels should be the longest and should cover the other hair beneath it. You will be able to trim afterwards, so don't worry about what it looks like at this point. Repeat the same technique above the upper lip for the moustache. Once the spirit gum dries, you may trim the hair to your liking.

Step 4
Remove the hair from your face safely. Because you prepped your skin appropriately, removal of the beard should be relatively easy. Take a brush or towel wet with spirit gum remover and dab at the hair underneath where it has adhered to the skin. Begin pulling gently as you go. The spirit gum should begin to ease up and the hair should come away without much effort. Continue this for the rest of your beard and moustache. After the hair has been removed, rinse your face with warm water, removing residual crusted bits of spirit gum. Wash again with the gentle facial cleanser and apply another thin layer of non-oil based facial moisturizer.
