How to Wash Leather Clothing

Leather jackets require some babying, but they are worth the effort if you like the style and feel of leather. If something gets spilled on your leather jacket, it is most effective to wash the jacket right away before the mess becomes a stain.

Things You'll Need

  • A mild soap
  • Water
  • Soft cloths
  • Small brush
  • Optional: leather conditioner

Use a small brush to lightly sweep away as much of the offending material as possible.

Mix some mild soap and water. Wet a soft, clean cloth in the mixture. With the cloth, pad the affected area--don't wipe--until the offending substance is gone.

Pad the affected area with a clean, dry cloth.

Hang the leather jacket to dry in a temperature-neutral space with little to no wind current.

Tips & Warnings

  • For added protection, use a soft cloth to apply a leather conditioner when the jacket is almost done drying. After it has dried, apply the conditioner again. This will keep the leather flexible.
  • Never use saddle soap or solvents on a leather jacket. Modern leather is not made to withstand that kind of torture.
