1. Place the top edge of the can within the gap of the circular moving parts of the opener. Be sure the turning handle is on the outside of the can. The smooth edge can opener should almost feel "locked" onto the can lid. Some other manual types, such as the Kitchen Aid, lock the can opener handle to the top of the can.

2. While holding the can in place with one hand, use your other hand to turn the opener knob clockwise. Keep turning until you complete the circle.

3. Remove the opener from the top of the can. You should be able to simply lift the lid off the top.
