Step 1
Outline your presentation before creating your slide show, preferably in Word. Split each outline into different sections or themes and, if necessary, divide those sections into smaller parts. This will allow you to have a preset topic for each slide and will make it easier to copy and paste your text.
-
Step 2
Create slides. The number of slides that you decide to put in will determine how long your presentation will be. Having too many slides can make a presentation dull; having too few can make it too brief. Read the outline of the slides to yourself while timing the length. When you feel you have the right length, create your slides. Go to the left window, right-click on a blank space and select "New Slide." Use this side window to select slides for editing or deletion.
-
Step 3
Choose a format. When you create a new slide, a window will appear on the right called "Slide Layout." You will see several thumbnail images for text and content layouts and other layouts. This section can provide a format for each of your slides if you need assistance to place text, images or both. You also can format text by clicking "Text Box" on the bottom toolbar to draw you own custom text area.
-
Step 4
Add text and templates. Each text box will let you add text by typing it out or by copying and pasting text into the text box. You can adjust the format by using the toolbar at the top of the screen for text. To add a template for your theme, go to "Format > Slide Design" and a window with multiple colors and font themes will appear. Preview each one before you decide to use it.
-
Step 5
Insert pictures. Click on "Insert > Picture > From File" if you have pictures to insert. Once the image is on the slide, adjust the placement and size by clicking on the boxes in the corners of the picture or clicking on the picture itself.
-
Step 6
Insert movies. Go to "Insert > Movies and Sounds > Movie From File." You can adjust the size and placement of the movie just as you would an image.
-
Step 7
Customize animation. Each text box, picture or movie can have its own effect when appearing on the slide. To change each individual animation, right-click on the object you want to animate and go to "Custom Animation." The window that will appear on the right will demonstrate how to edit. Click on "Add Effect" to change the entrance, exit, emphasis and motion of each object. Preview each effect by selecting "More" from the four lists and clicking on each description. Once you've chosen an animation, determine how fast it enters, how it activates and the order of animations on the slide. Animations are not a requirement, but they can add to the appeal of your presentation.
-
Step 8
Transition your slides. Slide transitions are similar to animations, only they apply to the slide itself. To change transitions, go to "Slide Show > Slide transition." The window on the right will preview each transition and display the speed adjustment of each effect and how to advance from slide to slide. If you want to use the same transition for all slides, click "Apply to All Slides." This is not required, but it makes the presentation less dull.
-
Step 9
Preview your show by pressing "F5." If you want to time your presentation, go to "Slide Show > Rehearse Timings." Previewing will allow you to see the final outcome before you save. When you feel satisfied with the results, save the presentation in a file. Go to "File > Save As." Under "Save as Type," scroll down to "PowerPoint Show." This will allow you to start the presentation immediately without having to go through the PowerPoint program.
