Building a snow sled need not be a difficult, time-consuming endeavor. Almost anything fairly flat that you can sit on can be used as a sled. A sled is one of the simplest designs that you can make at home.
Find a plastic trash can lid. It should be big enough to sit on and should not have handles sticking out of the top.
2
Cut four holes in the side of the rim. The holes should be roughly evenly spaced around the rim and should be large enough to pass a rope or strap through.
3
Tie two pieces of rope through the holes. Each piece of rope should join two adjacent holes and have enough slack to make for a comfortable handle.
4
Use the ropes to control the sled. You now have a disk-shaped sled with handles.
Tips & Warnings
Plastic lunch trays can be used as sleds as is. Simply put the tray lengthwise on the trail and sit on it, grasping your knees with your feet planted in the front.
Trash can lids will work even without the ropes. The straps are simply there to provide something to hold on to and to give you more control.
Some people prefer to use a single rope handle. If you want to use this style, ride the sled with the handle in the front and use a longer piece of rope to drag the sled when walking uphill.
