How to Use a Copier

The purpose of a copy machine is to make an exact copy of a document or picture. Many copiers have options to re-size and/or add color to your copy. Using a copy machine never alters the source document or picture you are using. Due to the number of copiers on the market, this article will not cover all the options available on all models. But, the basic options in this article will help you to make a copy on any machine.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure there is enough paper for the number of copies you wish to make in the paper tray. On a small copier, this may be just a tray on the front of your machine that will have a picture of envelopes or paper on the end closest to you. Most copiers have this tray for 8 x 11-inch paper, which is standard copier paper. If there is no paper, place a small amount into the tray as shown on the top of your tray. Most require it to be loaded length wise.

    • 2

Place your source document, or the picture you want to copy, on the copier face. To do this, lift the lid of the copier, which is always the very top of any copy machine. There are small lines on the top or side of the copier face that indicate length and width. Place your document against these lines until you find one that it will fit into. If your document is smaller than all the lines, place it in the top left corner of the copier face. Close the lid to the copier.

    • 3

Choose how many copies to make. Look at the control panel--a small window that will guide you to the buttons you must use to make your choice. Once you have made your choice, the control panel will move to the next option.

    • 4

Reduce or enlarge the size of your copy if your copier has this option. Choose which option you will use and press the corresponding button. Remember that your re-size must fit onto the paper that you have loaded. If this is a small item like an I.D. you can re-size as large as you want, but it is recommended that you look in that window, which will show you the size of your document against the size of your paper.

    • 5

Press the start button and watch your copies come out of the tray. This tray will be located on top of or to the side of your paper loading tray.
