Valentine's Day is a day to celebrate love in all its forms. Children enjoy giving cards and candy to their classmates probably as much as lovers enjoy sharing notes of affection. All the love that you have in your life should be celebrated on this occasion. Instead of going the path of commercial cards that are mass produced without your particular loves in mind, it's best to accompany chocolate or a present with something very personal from you. Valentine's Day crafts can be the most meaningful, as well as have the most longevity, because the receiver usually appreciates and understands the meaning of something so personal.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Red and pink paper
  • Craft supplies of choice
  • Transparent tape
  • Craft knife
  • Compass
  • Ruler
  • Spray adhesive
  1. Step 1

The first step in cutting hearts is deciding what crafts you are going to need. You can use red or pink construction paper, or visit a craft store such as Michael's for unique patterns of paper. Even lace doilies can be used for some crafts. The important thing is to first decide who you are designing your craft for. Is it a child? Your mother? Your love? Having made that decision, it makes it very easy to decide which papers you will need for your craft. Always get a couple of extra sheets. You never know what can happen when making crafts.

  2. Step 2

Once you have your papers ready, you should get out your compass. You can, of course, skip the compass if you are great at drawing hearts. To make sure they all come out even, a compass is recommended. Set the compass to the size you need to make your hearts. Swirl it in both directions until the top of your heart is perfected. Then, get out a ruler, and complete the heart to your desired length. For this simple heart design, you can use scissors to cut around the edges of your design perfectly. The hearts are now yours for the taking to add to any kind of personal gift.

  3. Step 3

For a more advanced and intricate heart design, the cutting is going to get more complicated. You can design a heart with your loved one's named carved on the inside, for example. This is popular to use in Valentine's Day crafts for kids. It also works for a teacher doing a Valentine's Day design for boards in the classroom. Draw the heart as designed in Step 1, with the extra addition of the name. Depending on the look you want your Valentine's, you can either write the name yourself in a sort of bubble letter design, or you can get traceable letters from any store that sells craft supplies. Draw an slightly larger heart than the one you are designing with the name. It should be a color that matches or properly contrasts the named heart. Using a craft cutter, place the paper on a surface like a cutting board that won't be damaged. Using the craft cutter, trace around the edges of the heart, the letters of the child's name, and the exterior of the heart. When you are done, the heart should be perfectly as you wished with the child's name clear to read. Cut out the larger heart. Use a spray adhesive, put the named heart on top of the larger heart. You should have a gorgeous Valentine now in your hand.

  4. Step 4

A fun way to cut hearts with children is to have them draw many hearts on different color papers. You can then cut them out, or have them do the cutting with safety scissors. Once you have many hearts, you can use them to make another heart-based picture. Animals made out of hearts make very popular keepsakes. if your child has a particular hobby or favorite sort of animal, personalizing this to their interest will thrill them.

  5. Step 5

Be creative. Design your own valentines. Trial and error is how most things are done the right way.

Tips & Warnings
  • You don't have to go out and spend a lot of money for the occasion. Most people have things around their house that they can use for hearts and designs.
  • Consider looking at things you no longer need, such as magazines, for photos or designs you might want to cut into hearts.
  • Don't cut the outer shapes of the heart until inner ones are done.
  • Use caution when having children cut designs.
  • Be careful with any sort of cutting project.
  • Combine personalized gifts with traditional ones on holiday such as Valentine's Day. It isn't a good idea to go too extreme in either direction.
  • Don't get into the trap of perfection. Crafts are never meant to be perfect. They are unique.
