Consider your target audience. Make sure your work is both thematically appropriate for your target age group and contains language that is challenging but not overly complex.

    • 2

Proofread your finished manuscript. Look for spelling and grammar errors. Have a friend read through it as well in case you missed anything.

    • 3

Figure out how you will pay your staff, such as the illustrator or graphic designer. You can offer a flat fee or a percentage of the profits from the sale of the book.

    • 4

Find an illustrator. Most children's books need an illustrator to create art for the cover, interior and any promotional items, such as posters or websites. You can find illustrators via your local paper, Craigslist.com, or even a website like Deviant Art. You may be able to find an artist at a local school or university that will work at a reduced rate.

Hire a graphic designer. You will need someone who is capable of creating the finished look of the book, including the cover and the blend of text and art on each page.

Find a printer. If you are lucky, you may find a print shop in your area. If not, some services to consider are lulu.com and xlibris.com. Your costs will depend on the type, length and number of books you need printed.

    • 7

Figure out how you will distribute the book. Some printers can help you with this, but, often, you will be on your own. Take your book to local bookstores, libraries, toy stores and coffee shops. Don't forget to set up a website where people can buy your book and learn about its creators.

Get an ISBN number. You need an ISBN number to sell your book in some locations. Request a number at isbn.org. This may cost a few hundred dollars.
