How to Cancel an Antivirus Subscription

You downloaded antivirus software from the Internet and were given a security key. You think you are protected and the antivirus manufacturer is in your corner. But what happens if you decide you want to cancel your antivirus subscription and perhaps choose another provider? It may be a hassle for you, but here is how you can avoid common pitfalls and problems when making the transition from one antivirus to another.

1. In the case of auto renewal, or just an antivirus subscription you are unsure about, call the provider's 800 number directly. Call during regular business hours so you are sure to get the staff that is most knowledgeable. When you are given a list of options, ask for customer service or renewals and cancellations.

2. When you are connected to an agent, tell them you wish to cancel your automatic subscription renewal or just cancel your subscription entirely. The more information you give them, the better, such as email address, license/key or registration number and account number, if necessary.

3. When the customer service agent at the antivirus company brings up your information and locates your account, be sure to ask for a confirmation number to your cancellation request. This tells any future representative that you have called and canceled previously.

4. It does not hurt to follow up with a letter directly to the company if you have their address. If not, the antivirus company's address is found on CD Roms, documentations and on the Internet.

5. Remove your antivirus by going to add/remove programs and removing the specific antivirus programs. Only after you have done that can you reinstall software either from disk or download.

6. Check your bank or credit card statements for a few months after the cancellation to make sure the antivirus manufacturer is not still billing your account.
