Clippers add so much to a man's haircut than simply using scissors. You can blend the hair better, create drastic looks and clean up the hairline. Some people think clippers can only be used on the sides of a haircut, but that's not true. It is easy to cut the top of a man's hair with clippers.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Clippers
  • Smock
  • Comb
  1. Step 1

Attach the appropriate guide comb to the end of the clippers. The combs have the length written right on them, so check for it.

  2. Step 2

Opt for no guide comb if you want to use the clippers to basically shave the top of the man's hair.

  3. Step 3

Determine exactly how much hair you'd like to trim. This is when you figure out if you want to make the top of the man's hair short or perhaps you'd like to make a mohawk effect on the top of his head.

  4. Step 4

Comb the hair so it's smooth. It's usually best to use the clippers on dry hair as opposed to damp hair.

  5. Step 5

Start at the hairline and run the clippers in a straight line across the top of the head. The guide comb will ensure that you get an even cut.

  6. Step 6

Make sure to hold the clippers in the same way during the entire pass through. Meaning, the guide comb is curved. So, your cut will be shorter if you hold the narrow part of the comb against the scalp. For a slightly longer cut, balance the clipper by the wider part of the guide comb.

  7. Step 7

Use the clippers instead of scissors. Run the comb through the hair and hold the hair out to the desired length. Run the clippers, with no guide comb, along the end of the comb, thus trimming off any hair on that side of the comb. Some people find this faster than using scissors.
