One of the great advantages of using Photoshop is that you can change the shape of the images you work with. Whether you modify an image of your own design or some other image, you can use the Photoshop Shear filter to bend and curve images to suit your needs.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Launch Photoshop and open the image you want to work on. To open an image from a file, from the "File" menu, click "Open." Select the folder you need, click on the file name and then click "Open."

  2. Step 2

Create a new canvas to work on by clicking on "File" and then "New." In the dialog box, adjust the width and height of the new canvas so that it's much bigger than the image file. Click on the down arrow next to "Background Contents" and select "Transparent" and then "OK."

  3. Step 3

Copy your original image to the new canvas. First, click on your image. Then, from the "Select" menu, click "All." Next, from the "Edit" menu, click "Copy." To paste, click on your new canvas, then from the "Edit" menu, click "Paste."

  4. Step 4

Select the "Filter" menu. Click on "Distort" and then "Shear." At the top of the dialog box, you'll see a thick black line in a grid. Drag the line to create the curves and bends you want. Photoshop shows you a preview of your work as you drag the line, so you can see how your curves affect your work.

  5. Step 5

Choose "OK" when you bend the image to your satisfaction. This will apply the curves to your image. Save your work by choosing "File" and then "Save As."

Tips & Warnings
  • When you open your image, you may need to rotate it. To do so, from the "Image" menu, click on "Rotate Canvas" and choose the degree to which you want to rotate your image.
  • You want your new canvas to be much bigger than your original file size so you can bend and curve your image without having the sides cut off.
  • Use the Move tool to move your image around your canvas.
  • Don't get confused by the Curves tool in Photoshop. You use this tool to help you adjust the tonal values of an image, not to change the shape.
