1
Keep your personal information just that--personal. When you use forums and chat rooms, there is no reason why you should use your real name. Other people don't need to know your name, gender, the city or even the state in which you live or anything else that they could use to identify you. If you are a female, don't make it obvious through your usernames or profiles. In addition, make your passwords very difficult for other people to figure out, and change them often.
-
2
Ask websites and search engines that offer free information about people, such as phone numbers and home addresses, to delete your entries. In addition, ask your telephone company not to include your home address in the phone book.

3
Know that if you run an online business, you are putting yourself at a slightly higher risk of attracting the attention of a cyber stalker. For this reason, don't put your home address on your business website, even if you run your business out of your home. Get a Post Office box for your business use.

4
Avoid advertising your business by talking to people in chat rooms, forums, social network sites and dating sites. Cyber stalkers usually prefer to target people that they meet on these websites. If someone does contact you in an unprofessional manner through your business or otherwise, make it clear that the contact is unacceptable and report the incident to the authorities immediately.

5
Make sure that any website that you use to transmit personal information, such as credit card numbers, begins with "https" and not "http." A website that begins with "https" is secure.

Tips & Warnings
Don't use a local Internet Service Provider, or ISP, if possible. When you use a local IPS, anyone can easily find out your geographical location. Instead, use a Nationwide ISP.
