The Windows XP Registry is a fascinating storage directory that holds all of your Windows XP system configuration changes. Locate the Windows XP Registry effortlessly by following these methods.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Turn on your computer.

  2. Step 2

Click the "Start" button on the bottom toolbar to open the "Start" menu.

  3. Step 3

Select "Run..." A search window will pop open. Type the location of the Registry as "regeedit," "regeedit.exe" or "regeedit32.exe" into the "Open" field and click the "Ok" button to open the "Registry Editor" window.

  4. Step 4

Back up your Windows XP Registry within the "Registry Editor" BEFORE modifying or exploring the folder tree displayed on the right side of the "Registry Editor" window.

  5. Step 5

Create, as an optional method of accessing the Registry at any time, a desktop shortcut to the Windows XP Registry. Right click anywhere on your Windows XP desktop, select the word "New" from the drop-down menu and select "Shortcut" from the menu that appears to the side of the original drop-down. In the "Create Shortcut" window that opens type the location of the Registry as outlined in Step 3, click the "Next" button, choose a name for your shortcut such as "Registry" and then click the "Finish" button.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use caution when dealing with the Windows XP Registry as accidental deletions or changes made within the Registry can have a negative--and sometimes fatal--impact on your system's performance. Never delete or modify your Registry unless you are a certified Microsoft technician or are receiving Registry modification assistance from a certified Microsoft technician.
