Step 1
Plan to use scissors to cut thick hair. You can't use razors or thinning shears when cutting thick hair. These won't cut through the hair and can leave the length very uneven.

Wet the hair. No matter the texture, cutting damp hair is much less difficult than a dry haircut. As you wet the hair with a spray bottle, use a comb to work out any tangles in the hair.

Measure out the length of the hair. Most stylists use their fingers to decide how much hair they plan to take off.

Step 4
Divide the hair into very small sections. Trim the thick hair in each small section before moving to the next. If you try to cut too much hair at once, you'll end up bending the hair with the scissors.

Step 5
Hold out each side of the hair next to the clients head. Measure the length visually and with your fingers to decide if you need to cut more to make it even.
