Step 1
Make an appointment with your salon for a consultation. This process will require both frequent haircuts as well as frequent color processes, so it's wise to make a plan with a stylist and colorist that you trust to figure out how to gracefully transition you from black to silver hair.
-
Step 2
Start by lightening your current color by a shade or two with a single process color. Then, go in regularly for lowlights and highlights as well as white highlights as your color grows out to help hide the color line.
-
Step 3
Get highlights and lowlights regularly throughout the process. Your colorist will then gradually lighten your hair and shift you from black to gray to silver with white highlights and this will keep your hair looking more natural than single process color.
-
Step 4
Cut your hair as short as you can to help get rid of the old color and minimize that striped appearance, and go in for frequent trims to keep your hair looking healthy and speed up the transition.
-
Step 5
Maintain the health of your hair by using products especially designed to protect gray hair. Minimize dullness and prevent that greenish or yellowish tint that is the bane of gray hair by using a blue, silver or lavender rinse as well as styling products designed for silver hair with UV filters and shine enhancers.
