The beauty pageant evolved from swimsuit competitions, so it is no wonder that the swimsuit category is among the most cherished of pageant traditions. Whatever the pageant theme or location, swimsuits always hold our attention. Direct this category well, and your beauty pageant will get kudos from audience and participants alike.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Specify the type of suit acceptable in your instructions to contestants. To help the judges, many pageants allow only one-piece suits with two straps. Whether you choose this strategy, let the contestants decide what to wear or any path between the two, clearly outline what you want to avoid surprises.

  2. Step 2

Require high heels with swimsuits so all contestants sport the same flowing line as they walk across the stage. Heels produce the classic bathing suit look we have all come to expect. You might elect to specify height and color so that attention stays off the floor.

  3. Step 3

Instruct contestants to arrange their hair so that the entire suit can be seen by the judges. They should wear their hair on their head or tied back behind their shoulders. Remember to instruct them on whether you allow jewelry or accessories.

  4. Step 4

Select music for this category that is bright and bouncy. Above all, avoid music with saxophones or any hint to suggestiveness. Contestants should move across the stage moderately quickly, but should not appear hurried or rushed. Keep overall timing in mind as you direct this event.
