A background in iStopMotion animation is a scene or series of scenes that appear behind the animation action. This gives the animation action a three-dimensional look and feel. Backgrounds in iStopMotion are based on chroma key technology, which iStopMotion makes even easier to use than the traditional "green screen" or "blue screen" process.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Place a solid color surface behind the area that is captured by your external camera. It acts as a solid background for the animation frames you shoot. Make sure the color is solid, bright and different from anything you are shooting.

  2. Step 2

Select the "Compositing" tab at the bottom right corner of the iStopMotion animation working screen.

  3. Step 3

Click on "Background" at the top right of the iStopMotion screen.

  4. Step 4

Choose from the background image options provided by iStopMotion. Click on the representative photo.

  5. Step 5

Go to the bottom of the iStopMotion animation working screen and click on the "Pick Color" button located beneath the heading "Source Chroma Key."

  6. Step 6

Move your cursor to an area on the solid background in the iStopMotion animation area and click to select the background color. That color then appears in the color box next to the "Pick Color" button. The image you select for the background immediately replaces the solid color background.

  7. Step 7

Add an image from your image library. Click on "Source" and then "Choose Folder" from the top of the Compositing drop-down menu to the right of your screen. The "Choose Folder" function allows you to search for and select your own image file. Just make sure your image is saved in a .png format.

  8. Step 8

Remove the preset. Click "Remove Background" located beneath the images provided by iStopMotion.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check the system requirements before downloading the demo or purchasing the software license. IStopMotion only runs on Macs. To get the best results, Boinx suggests Mac OS X Tiger, at least QuickTime version 7.1, a graphics card with OpenGL support and the still camera plugin Mac OS X v 10.3 or newer.
  • Boinx Software recommends that users of Mac OS X v10.2.x run iStopMotion 1.5, and Mac OS X v10.4 "Tiger" users run iStopMotion version 1.8.1 or newer.
