Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Take a self-defense class. Participating in a self-defense class will give you the tools necessary to know what to look for in a potential robber, as well as give you the knowledge of what to do if a dangerous situation arises. You can contact your local police department or community center to inquire about self-defense class locations.
Step2
Travel in groups. When possible, don't travel alone. This includes during day-time and night-time hours. A mugger looks for opportunities to grab what he wants, but he'll look elsewhere if he's outnumbered.
Step3
Avoid unknown locations. Because of your unfamiliarity with new places, you may be an easy target. If you're traveling alone, map out areas and places you want to visit before you leave your secure location. Try to learn where help is (police stations, fire departments and 24-hour grocery stores) before venturing out into new territory.
Step4
Stay alert and always remain aware of your surroundings. With quick glances all around you, you can familiarize yourself with the sites and sounds in the area. This also allows you to recognize anyone that may be watching or following you. If you have an uneasy feeling at any time, go into a well-populated area and seek guidance.
Step5
Keep valuables out of sight. If you display large amounts of money or objects that may be valuable, you're setting yourself up for becoming a target. Don't pull out larges sums of money in crowds, and avoid wearing jewelry or other objects that portray wealth.
