How to Paint a Golf Cart

The golf cart is getting old and the paint is starting to chip. Or maybe you're bored with the golf cart's look and want a change of pace. Either way, it's time to repaint it. There's no need to take it to a professional to do this though.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sand paper
  • Putty
  • Tarp
  • Painter's tape
  • Butcher's paper
  • Primer
  • Vehicle paint
  • Sprayer
  • Clear coat
  • Goggles
  • Smock
  • Gloves
  1. Step 1

Wash the golf cart. It should look as clean as it would if brand new. Any dirt or grit stuck to the body is going to make a bump in your paint and keep it from looking smooth and pristine.

  2. Step 2

Sand the surface. Any rough spots need to be smoothed out. Use a large grit sand paper for the courser areas and fine grit for small areas that only need a little work. Putty any holes or small pits.

  3. Step 3

Prepare the golf cart for painting. Cover the seats, the windshield (both sides), anything chrome and anything else you don't want painted with a tarp, painter's tape or butcher's paper.

  4. Step 4

Prime the surface. Make sure the coat of primer is even so the paint adheres evenly. Some golf carts are made of materials that don't require a primer to paint them. Check with the manufacturer.

  5. Step 5

Paint the surface with a paint sprayer. Wait at least 15 minutes before applying another coat. Repeat this step until you've achieved the look you want.

  6. Step 6

Apply a clear coat. Let it dry for at least 15 minutes before applying another coat. Repeat this step no more than three times. Allow the golf cart to dry for 90 minutes.

Tips & Warnings
  • Vehicle spray paint is a less expensive alternative to the traditional paint and sprayer.
  • Wear goggles and cover as much of your body as possible with a smock and gloves. Paint in a well-ventilated area so the fumes don't overwhelm you.
  • Some brands of golf carts are made with special materials that might need additional steps to adhere to the paint effectively. Ask the manufacturer about your cart.
