Origami is the wonderful Japanese craft of paper folding, and here are instructions for you to make your own origami rhino. Whether you're a beginner or a pro, this is a fun project. Just follow the steps below and soon you'll have another great animal to add to your origami collection.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 8-inch square of origami paper
  1. Step 1

Use a sheet of origami paper about 8 inches square to begin this project. With the paper, color side up, fold all of the corners to the center and then unfold the two of the flaps. Fold the other flaps out; this should look like an origami "Bird Base." Turn it over and fold one half of a "Preliminary Fold" and then do a "Petal Fold."

  2. Step 2

Fold the two white sections together from the edges, and then fold those layers out to the edges and fold it in half. Do a "Reverse Fold," and then slide out and reshape until the top folds lie along part of the bottom folds.

  3. Step 3

Do a "Reverse Fold" to create the back lines of your origami rhino, and repeat what you did to reshape the back of the previous "Reverse Fold." Then "Reverse Fold" it upwards until its about 45 degrees from the bottom.

  4. Step 4

Shape the legs, fold over the flaps from the back. Now shape the tail by pulling down the last "Reverse Fold" until it is on the same level as the back of your origami rhino. Then bend it until it looks like a rhino tail.

  5. Step 5

Create the head by making a "Reverse Fold." Then fold the inner layer to form the rhino's smaller horn and take the bigger part of the layer to fold into the larger horn. Reshape it until you are happy with how it looks, and then fold back a little of the main body towards part of the head to form the ears.

  6. Step 6

Crimp the head to form the wrinkles in the neck, and then do "Valley" and "Mountain" folds to form the front legs of your rhino. Do the same with the back legs and your origami rhino is complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • The "Bird Base" is made up of a preliminary fold that has both the front and the back sides folded upwards as "Petal Folds."
  • The "Preliminary Fold" is a traditional origami base that is made by bringing the four corners of your paper square together.
  • The "Petal Fold" lifts a point and then brings it upwards so that the two edges lie together.
  • The "Reverse Fold" has two radial "Mountain Folds" extending from a one point on a central fold, and a reversal of the central fold on the affected end, all done at the same time.
  • A "Valley Fold" is a diagonal fold that resembles a valley when it is unfolded.
  • A "Mountain Fold" is made by turning your paper over and then doing a "Valley Fold" and then turning the paper over again.
  • This project takes some time to master.
