  1. How to fish from the beach

    • 1

Know the local rules. What are the limits? What times can you fish? What can be used as bait? Most beaches that allow fishing don't let you do it during peak swimming hours or allow swimming at all.

    • 2

Choose your line and baits. You don't want a 60-pound test line if you are trying to catch whiting nor do you want to use 12-pound test line while seeking sea bass. Check with a local bait shop ahead of time to see what is best in the waters you plan to fish. Do the same for bait.

    • 3

Put your waders on. While you will set up far from the beach, you will have to head into the water to catch your fish. Chest-level waders should do the trick. Many anglers also go into the water to cast.

    • 4

Cast your line. You want to use a two-handed overhead cast, but you don't need to be Hercules. Get the bait out there and let the currents do the trick.

    • 5

Wait for a bite. This may be the toughest part for many fishermen who are used to casting on rivers and lakes. Many surf anglers will throw out multiple lines and then stick their poles into a tubing rig attached to their truck. This allows them to catch more fish and have something stationary and strong in case the line gets stuck in something.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember to always check about permits and catch limits. Wear something warm because going in and out of the water can make you cold. You can use normal sized poles ( seven to 12 feet) to surf fish.

  • Avoid going to deep into the water while casting and reeling in. One good wave can knock you down.
