How to Make a Collage Using Newspaper

Making collages can be a fulfilling experience for art lovers of all ages. Finding unique materials and ideas can be challenging sometimes, but really it just takes a little imagination to inexpensively create unusual and aesthetically pleasing art work for your home. This project uses newspapers in an interesting way to create visually stimulating collage art. Here's how.

Things You'll Need

• Daily newspapers including colored advertisements and comics.
• 18"x 24"Masonite board
• Modge Podge or collage glue
• Paint brushes
• Plastic gloves if desired.

Instructions

How to Make a Collage Using Newspaper

1. Begin by separating your black and white pages from your colored images.

2. Tear newspaper into irregular shapes and sizes.

3. Begin applying newsprint to the Masonite board by applying a layer of Modge Podge and then a layer of newspaper. Be sure to rotate pages so that the newsprint is both readable, and at angles or upside down. Layer papers and shapes to fill the board. Follow the instructions on the Modge Podge media to insure adhesion.

4. Once the entire board is covered, consider adding just a splash of color with a few pieces of colored print. Overlap the edges of the colored print with black and white newsprint to help it blend in.

5. When finished apply a layer of the shellac media or Modge Podge to the entire piece. Let dry and display.

Tips & Warnings

• This is a great project to do with seniors or children as it doesn't take too much skill to get a great result.

• Do an entire piece just on comics or crossword puzzles!

• Apply the collage onto a pre-stretched canvas for easy hanging later.

• Make a collage of just car ads for the car lover in your family.

• Don't over-brush the newsprint or it will break down or get blurry.
