Step 1
Look for a backpack with multiple adjustable straps. When you have the ability to adjust the pack up and down as well as around the waist, you'll get a much better fit.
-
Step 2
Get someone to help you adjust the backpack once you have it on. Otherwise you will have to experiment, taking it off a number of times to make the adjustments until it's just right. Do the adjustments with the load inside the pack. Whenever you add or reduce the load, you will need to adjust the back straps.
-
Step 3
Sit the padded straps on your shoulders so that they lay across the top of the shoulders and don't droop down your back or pull on your clothes. The straps help to keep you balanced and stable so you don't tip over from the weight. The bottom of the backpack, where the bulk of the weight is situated, should be sitting just above your hips.
-
Step 4
Pull up on one side first, and then match the adjustment to the other side. This adjustment should be done individually to accommodate uneven shoulders, which most of us have.
-
Step 5
Tie the strap around your chest before tying the waist strap. It should reach comfortable around your waist and not constrict your breathing.
-
Step 6
Retain an upright posture when carrying a backpack. Keep your head up and your eyes ahead.
