Wool is a gorgeous and fashionable fabric that's long been a favorite of professional tailors and home-sewers alike. Many think of wool as a winter-weight material, but this versatile fabric is actually perfect for all but the hottest weather. Wool presents a bit of a challenge for beginning sewers, though, so read on for some tips and tricks to make your next wool project a success.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use the right needle. A sharp point needle is essential for sewing with heavier wools, whereas a ball point needle works better for cashmere knits since it pushes through the fabric yarns rather than cutting them. Depending on the weight of your wool, you may need to use a heavier needle, like a size 16.

  2. Step 2

Line your wool garment with satin or silk. A lining not only reduces the itchy feeling some people experience when they wear wool, it also prevents wool pants and skirts from stretching out of shape.

  3. Step 3

Thrift your wool. Wool can be very expensive to buy, so seek out wool garments you can cut up and reuse for other projects at your local thrift shop. Wool coats, for instance, usually have enough material to make a medium-sized pair of pants or a skirt.

  4. Step 4

Look for wool in different weights. Most people think of wool as a cool-weather fabric, but wool comes in summer weight as well. Lightweight wool dresses, skirts, suits and slacks are a chic alternative to cotton when the weather turns warm.

  5. Step 5

Take care of your wool clothing. Since wool stretches so easily, allow your wool garments to "rest" between wearings. Hang your wool clothes carefully to prevent stretching. After washing, lay wool fabrics out flat to dry at room temperature.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never expose wool fibers to direct heat, which can cause shrinkage.
