Windows Vista Aero will give your screen the appearance of glass. It gives your desktop a cleaner look while incorporating new details such as live thumbnails, icons and animation. Windows Vista Aero will only work on Windows Vista Home Premium or better, so if you are still using Vista Basic, you must upgrade, or you'll end up losing out on this really cool function.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Windows Vista Home Premium or better
  1. Step 1

Turn on your computer. If you are unsure what version of Microsoft Vista you have installed, check under "System," which is found in the Control Panel. If your version is only Vista Basic, then you cannot use Aero, and you need to upgrade to at least Vista Home Premium.

  2. Step 2

In the correct version of Vista, click on the Windows logo in the left corner of your screen.

  3. Step 3

Select "Control Panel" and click to open. Once opened, make sure the view is set for "Classic View," which can be found on the left side of the Control Panel window.

  4. Step 4

Select and open the "Personalization" icon. Once this opens, select "Window Color and Appearance," which should be the first option in the window.

  5. Step 5

Once the Window Color and Appearance window opens, you should see a row of eight different colors. At the bottom, click on the link labeled "Open Classic Appearance Properties for More Color Options."

  6. Step 6

Once the next window opens, look at the section labeled "Color Scheme." Highlight "Windows Aero" by clicking on it. Once highlighted, click "OK" to save the changes, and then click out of the remaining windows. Windows should update your display properties so you have Aero turned on and functioning.
