How to Find Free Screensavers for Your Computer

Screensavers these days are less about monitor burn-in and more about personal expression. Whether we want to brighten a work desk or create a place of serenity in a home office, screensavers are a fun and easy way to personalize your computer. Buying screensavers can get expensive if you like variety and have a short attention span, but there are plenty of free ones out there for the asking.

1. The first stop for download-ables should always be Cnet.com. Although they don't have the huge selection other sites may have and some of the screensavers are only "free-to-try," the fact that they won't bog down your system with undesirable spyware and malicious nasties means safe and anxiety- free downloads.

2. Try Tnpsc.com. This is another spyware tested and "approved" website that has a fairly large collection of screensavers ranging from movie promos to Christian themes. There is a lot to look at on this site, so spend some time and download a few screensavers of your choice so you can switch them up at your whim.

3. Check out Wallpaperscreensavers.net. for more adware and spyware free offerings. This site has wallpaper screensavers, which is nice if you like the slideshow variety of desktop enhancements. There are plenty to choose from but not the most high-tech download-ables out there.

4. Dowscreensaver.com is a great website that offers a huge variety of 3-D action screensavers that would delight any desktop fan. Whether cartoon, movie or 3-D landscape, this site has it all. Some of the offerings are "free-to-try" and you might be tempted to drop $20. for a special find. Fun.

5. Freesaver.com is a great website that offers a wide variety of screensavers both 3-D and slideshow. The difference here is that the screensavers have a star-rating system, so it allows you to decide whether the download is worth your time in the first place. Most screensavers link you to the originating site, so be sure to save your PC settings before downloading.

6. Final stop, popularscreensavers.smileycentral.com. This site is a bit different and requires a software download that adds a button on your toolbar, and more. Once you register, you have access to hundreds of screensavers, but you also get Smiley Central, My Fun Cards and Cursor Mania. If you like to customize a lot of your PC these utilities might be fun to have, just run a spyware checker after downloading to keep your computer clean.

Tips & Warnings

• Always back up your system and/ or create a restore point before downloading any screensavers. This way, if your system starts acting funky, you can easily turn back the clock and get rid of all the items downloaded with your screensaver.
