Instructions

    • 1

When it comes to the proper care of your wrought iron gate, you should understand to stay right on top of it. There are numerous types of paints and sealants that you can use in order to reduce rust to occur.

    • 2

Clean your gate from debris as much as possible. This will ensure that very little corrosion occurs. If there is rust, use a stiff brush to scrape the rust off. If you paint over the rust, the rust will appear again sooner than later.

    • 3

Select any color paint, spray or brush on, that will resist moisture and rust. Try Rustoleum, and that type of paint.

    • 4

After painting, occasionally take a cloth and rub it over each part of the wrought iron gate. That will help preserve the gate's finish and help it look nice longer.

    • 5

You should also check the wrought iron gate on a regular basis to make sure that all of the screws and bolts are secured and check that no pieces need to be replaced.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be creative when painting the grate... There is no law that it has to be black!

  • Check the condition of the grate often.

  • When painting the grate, make sure there is plenty of ventilation so you don't inhale fumes!

  • Let the grate dry completely before putting it back in place (if you take it off to paint it).

Be careful not to sand the rust and breath it because it causes lung cancer. Some sandpaper is waterproof and you can dip it in a pail of water and use it wet to reduce breathing the rust. Also if you use a steel brush or sander you will need to wear gogles because fragments can get in your eyes and rust to the surface of your eye. Both myself and my father had to have fragments surgically removed from the surface of the eye.
