How to Reuse Candle Wax
Candles can add a delicate addition to any room. These candles, however, don't last forever: after use, all that's left behind are scattered scraps of wax. These bits and pieces don't have to go to waste, however: they can instead be recycled and given new life. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Wax scraps
- Heat-resistant container
- Saucepan
- Tongs
- Candle mold
- Vegetable oil
- Fresh wick
- Sifter or strainer (optional)
Instructions
-
-
1
Separate the wax scraps into separate piles of scented/colored and unscented/uncolored. Sort the scented wax further into distinct smells, such as citrus, spice and herbal.
-
2
Trim off as much of the burned wicks as you can, remove any tabs or labels and scrape off any dirt, debris or ash. Leave only the wax behind.
-
-
3
Place the wax scraps into a heat-resistant container, and place that container into a saucepan. Fill the saucepan with an inch of water.
-
4
On medium heat, bring the water to a boil. Lower the heat and let simmer. Stir the melting wax gently with a stirrer or tongs.
-
5
Remove any further wicks or tabs. In case of excessive debris, filter the wax through an old sifter or strainer. Let the wax cool for a minute.
-
6
Pour the cooling wax into a mold to create a new candle. Coat the inside of the mold beforehand with vegetable oil to ensure easy removal. Remember to place a wick into your mold before pouring the wax.
-
7
Repeat Steps 2-6 separately for each group.

Tips & Warnings
Your mold should have a mouth wider than the base so that the candle can slide out.
Mix your colored and scented wax wisely. Distinct colors can likely meld into some shade of brown, and scents can combine in unexpected ways.
Don't use soup cans; their ridges keep the wax inside the can.
