In many cases of temporary hair loss, the condition will go away on its own. However, when treatment is necessary, the options available often depend on the type of alopecia. If you are concerned about the potential side effects of more aggressive drug therapies like minoxidil lotion, steroids or anti-fungal medications, you might want to learn more about these alternative remedies.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Reduce intake of saturated fats. Include more fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, essential fatty acids, and protein from sources such as nuts, legumes, and soy in your daily diet. Sometimes hair loss is the direct result of poor nutrition.

  2. Step 2

Take vitamin supplements like B vitamins, biotin, magnesium and zinc. Adequate amounts of these nutrients are necessary for healthy hair growth. Talk to your doctor first before adding any supplements to your diet.

  3. Step 3

Consult with a clinical herbalist about natural herbal remedies like ginkgo, rosemary, yarrow, horsetail, Saw palmetto, Echinacea and Siberian ginseng. Some of these herbs help to stimulate immune system function, and in some cases, may help to treat the underlying cause of hair loss.

  4. Step 4

Massage the scalp using essential oils of cedar wood, lavender, sage, rosemary and thyme. Therapeutic massage helps to reduce stress by increasing blood circulation in the scalp.

  5. Step 5

Try hypnosis. Researchers now are taking a closer look at hypnosis for its possible effects on hair regrowth in people with alopecia, especially in those individuals who fail to respond to more conventional treatments. In one study, after several sessions of hypnotherapy, full hair regrowth was seen in 75% of the participants.

Tips & Warnings
  • While the use of herbal remedies is becoming increasingly popular, they should be taken only under the supervision of your health care provider. Some herbs can interact adversely with other herb preparations, certain prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs.
  • Although studies have shown no side effects associated with the topical application of essential oils to the scalp, some people do suffer allergic reactions.
