How to Do a Barani in Gymnastics

Advanced gymnasts combine twisting motions with somersaulting motions. On variation of a somersault is called a barani. A barani is a front somersault with a half twist. Read on to learn how to do a barani in gymnastics.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tumbling mat
  1. Step 1

    Practice a front somersault in a piked position instead of a tucked position.

  2. Step 2

    Determine from which direction your 180 degree turn will start.

  3. Step 3

    Practice the front piked somersault with a step out.

  4. Step 4

    Add the half twist to the somersault, twisting right before landing to develop the motion.

  5. Step 5

    Practice the front somersault piked and as you jump and lift your hips off the ground, drop your shoulder right or left for the direction twist.

Tips & Warnings
  • An advanced gymnasts should consistently turn in one direction for all twisting motions.
  • Practicing on a trampoline first, will allow greater height and accuracy for developing somersault progressions.
  • When learning the barani and twisting let, be careful not to twist into the ground when landing. This could cause knee injuries.
