Step 1
Practice. If you are new at poker, then you may never master the game, but practicing as much as possible will help you improve. You can do this easily by playing on many poker website's play money tournaments or by going to into tournaments with low buy-ins. Other than the hands-on part of learning, there are many published poker books available that can help with your success. You can get a general poker book or one that is focused purely on online poker.

Step 2
Play with odds. If you want to rely on odds along with skills than there are a few poker games you can play to help you win more. Some websites offer payouts to five players instead of three in a 10-person sit and go tournament that are known as beginner tournaments. Payouts will not be as big as the others because it is spread among five people, but your chances of placing have increased substantially.
-
Step 3
Another way of increasing the odds is playing a heads up tournament. It is a much different style that may take a while to get used to, but you only have to outlast one player instead of nine. The prize is double whatever you staked, so a win is a nice addition to your money.
-
Step 4
Free rolls. One way of making a pure profit is by playing a free roll. You do not have to pay anything to get into a free roll so anything that you may win is pure profit. The only problem with the free rolls is the difficulty to place. There could be almost 5,000 in one free roll tournament, and only the top 100 people will get paid.
-
Step 5
The key to free rolls is to play really loose early on. That may end your tournament life early but if you double or triple up quickly than you can glide along until the chip average catches up with you again.
-
Step 6
Watching. Other than actually playing or reading, spend some time watching other players. There are dozens of poker TV shows and most of the poker websites allow you to look in on a table even if you are not playing. This can help you gain insight and experience on the world of online poker.

Step 7
Colluding. This last how-to is very risky and even banned on some websites. It is known as colluding and can actually lead to your banishment from certain poker websites. It works simply. Get a friend to join the same poker website as you and you both enter a tournament together. You can just avoid playing hands with each other for a slight advantage or actually communicate and tell each other hands that you have so you know better pot odds.
