This is what your iPod can look like when it's jailbroken

The iPod touch is a beautiful device, but unfortunately Apple restricted a lot of it's potential by locking the firmware. The only way to unlock the full potential of your iPod and install custom applications, ringtones, etc, is to "jailbreak" the iPod, whereby you remove Apple's firmware restrictions. Previously this required opening up the actual iPod and voiding the warranty, but luckily with recent advances you can safely jailbreak your iPod with little to no computer experience, and your warranty will stay completely in tact! This is 100% safe, and there is no risk of damaging your iPod if you do it properly.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iPod Touch running 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 firmware
  • Windows PC or Mac
  • iPod USB connector cord
  1. Step 1

Make sure your iPod is running .3 or .4 firmware, which is the two latest versions. You can see this when you connect your iPod in itunes. If it is not the newest firmware, upgrade!

  2. Step 2

First, go to http://download.ziphone.org/ and download either the Windows or Mac version of the jail breaking software, depending on your system. It is 18MB in size, so it may take a couple minutes to download. When you are finished, open the installer, and extract the files to a folder somewhere on your computer.

  3. Step 3

Go to the folder you unzipped ZiPhone to, and open the bottom file, "ZiPhoneGUI.exe"

  4. Step 4

Make sure your iPod is connected via USB cord, and then hit the "Jailbreak" button on the left side of the interface.

  5. Step 5

Leave your iPod connected and let ZiPhone work it's magic for a couple minutes until it is done.

  6. Step 6

That's it, your done! Unplug your iPod and enjoy your new freedom!

Tips & Warnings
  • If this worked, you should consider donating a small sum of money to the maker of ZiPhone to support future releases
  • If anything goes wrong, or you want to un-jailbreak your iPod, follow steps 1-3 and then click the "Prepare for Upgrade" button, and then use iTunes to restore your iPod's firmware.

on 11/30/2009 to get it back to normal with your content on it just sync it with ur computer and click restore. This will also help if ur ipod is in recovery mode. Once it has been restored then just sync and get all ur content back. And yes a jailbroken ipod can still run itunes normally

on 4/16/2009 Maybe you should let them know they also need to first be running itunes as well. Now mine is messed up and the fix is not working. My ipod just has a picture like it wants to connect to itunes but itunes won't let it because it says it is in recovery mode. and the supposed fix is not doing anything to it either. I now have a really expensive paper weight
