As you are making your initial edit of a video project, you may need to move a clip from one place to another. You will find this easy to do in the Adobe Premiere Pro Timeline. You can move a clip by clicking on it, or a series of clips, and dragging it to an empty spot within the Timeline. Here are a few tips.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Select and then drag the clip to an empty spot, or right up against another clip. As you move the clip, watch for the time-code rectangle that will appear, as it indicates the time at which the clip you are moving will end-up within the Timeline. Note when you drag a clip out of the sequence, the gap where the clip was will remain.

  2. Step 2

Know the default mode when you are dragging a clip is “Lift/Overlay.” The Lift/Overlay icon automatically appears when you are dragging and dropping clips within the Timeline. If you press the “Ctrl” key when you drag a clip, it will be extracted from the sequence, and the gap will be closed.

  3. Step 3

Press the “Ctrl” key as you drop a clip between 2 clips and it will be inserted, meaning, you do not have to move the clips down the Timeline.

  4. Step 4

“Lift” a clip from a sequence and overwrite another by clicking and dragging one or more clips to a new destination in the Timeline. Then drop it directly onto the clip to be overwritten.

  5. Step 5

“Lift” a clip and “insert” it in a new location by dragging the clip, and pressing “Ctrl” as you release the mouse button. The clip will be dropped into the new location.

  6. Step 6

“Extract” a clip and overlay another by clicking “Ctrl” and dragging the clip to the location. Release Ctrl before you release the mouse button, and the clips will drop into their new location.

  7. Step 7

“Extract” a clip and “insert” it in a new location by dragging the clip while pressing “Ctrl,” and then release the mouse button to drop the clip into its new location.
