A sport rich in tradition, baseball requires coordination, strength and speed for successful play. Learning the proper way to swing a bat is critical to get hits when your turn at bat arrives. Learn how to swing the bat right handed to execute a swing properly.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Position yourself in the correct leg stance. Stand a little more than hip distance apart with your weight shifted to the leg in the back (your right leg if you are attempting to bat rat handed.) Bend the knees slightly to evenly distribute your weight to the back leg.

  2. Step 2

Hold the bat correctly when you attempt to bat right handed. Bring the hands together on the lower part of the bat with your right hand on top of your left hand. Grip the bat to ensure proper hold and control. Hold the bat 10 to 12 inches away from your body in relation to your shoulder area. Experiment with positioning as some batters are more comfortable with the bat elevated slightly above the shoulder area while others hold the bat lower and more forward.

  3. Step 3

Combine foot positioning and proper bat holding to execute a right-handed swing. Start the rotation of your hips, back leg and bat to propel the bat forward and accelerate the swing to hit the ball. Step with your front leg while you rotate your back foot (keeping the weight in the ball of your foot) 45 degrees. Swing the bat level and follow through the swing once contact is made with the ball.
