Repairing a circuit board often leads to removing solder. Circuits and joints that no longer work or are in need of replacement mean more solder needs to be removed. With a few different ways to remove solder, it is easy to find which method works best for your project.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use braided fiber solder wick made from woven copper to remove solder. This is least expensive option.

  2. Step 2

Place braided fiber tip on top of solder and press down with heating tool. Push down into the joint of the solder to watch the solder move from the board onto the fiber.

  3. Step 3

Move the fiber along the remaining solder using a clean piece of the fiber at every heating. Do this until all the solder is gone. Discard used fiber.

  4. Step 4

Push down on the plunger of a solder suction device to lock in the air. This second removal technique utilizes professional equipment.

  5. Step 5

Push the large button on the side of the suction device to create a small vacuum. Hold the position until the next step.

  6. Step 6

Apply heat to the solder joint with the solder tool to soften it for the suction device. Have the suction ready to go as soon as the solder is sufficiently heated which is apparent from the visible bubbling of the solder.

  7. Step 7

Place suction tool nozzle directly over the warmed solder and depress the trigger on the side of the suction device. Repeat until you have removed all the solder.
