White noise, sometimes known as "background noise," can be especially frustrating to the person who is making a Podcast or other MP3 recording. Unless you're recording in a studio, it's likely that you are going to have to deal with some degree of white noise, but you can remove white noise from an MP3 file using the open-source, multi-platform software, Audacity.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Download Audacity from the SourceForge Audacity website (see Resources). Audacity comes in PC, Mac and Linux versions. Install Audacity on your computer.
Step2
Open Audacity. Select "File" and "Open" to open your MP3 file in Audacity.
Step3
Identify a portion of your MP3 file that contains only white noise and no other sounds. The first two seconds of a recording are likely to be white noise. Select that portion of the MP3 file by clicking your mouse at the beginning and dragging it to the two second mark.
Step4
Click "Effect" and then "Noise Removal" to open the Noise Removal window. Select "Get Noise Profile." This tells Audacity that the selected portion is white noise.
Step5
Select your entire file and choose "Effect" and then "Noise Removal" again. Use the slider to choose how much of the noise you want to remove. Start with a small amount and repeat the process if there is too much white noise remaining.
Step6
Press "Remove Noise" to complete the white noise removal process. Listen to your MP3 file and verify that you have removed the white noise.
