Coloring hair at home can be a very easy and cost-efficient alternative to going to the salon. Knowing the expert tricks, such as how to correctly part the hair, can help you apply your color neatly and evenly. The basic parting for color is called a T-part, which is clipping the hair into four sections that form a "T" shape at the round of the head.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rat tail comb
  • 4 large clips
  1. Step 1

Use a rat tail comb to section hair starting at the center of the hairline and ending at the round of the head. This looks like a typical middle part.

  2. Step 2

Part the hair vertically from the round of the head to just behind the ear. Use nice clean partings with straight lines.

  3. Step 3

Comb hair and twist smoothly into a large clip. The ends of the hair should be placed away from the face.

  4. Step 4

Repeat step 2 and 3 on both sides of the head.

  5. Step 5

Continue the middle part down the back of the head, making four sections. Each section should be equal in size.

  6. Step 6

Clip the remaining back two sections up smoothly. Keep the ends of the hair in the clip so they're out of the way when you are doing the other sections.

Tips & Warnings
  • The finished sections should be even. The front two sections and the back two sections should be the same size.
  • Parting the hair is important because it gives you control, and helps prevent missing spots.
