Things You'll Need:
- Torque wrench
-
Step 1
Use a torque wrench to measure the lugs on your truck. While a wrench with a needle indicator works the best, use a dial-clicker wrench for these steps.
-
Step 2
Dial the torque to a foot/lb. ratio that you are certain is below the lug nut specifications for your truck. Attempt to turn the lug nut. If the wrench clicks but doesn't turn the lug nut, your torque is too low.
-
Step 3
Increase the torque by 5 feet/lb. and test the lug nut again. Continue to increase the torque by this increment until the lug nut turns.
-
Step 4
Measure lugs on all wheels and find an average to determine the specific torque needed if you don't know the appropriate torque for your lug nuts.
-
Step 1
Set the torque wrench to the correct feet/lb. for the lug nuts on your truck.
-
Step 2
Use a crisscross pattern to tighten the lug nuts. The wrong sequence can cause the brake drums or rotors to warp and fail. For example, on a wheel with four lug nuts, tighten in the following order: top left, bottom right, bottom left, top right.
-
Step 3
Tighten the lug nuts evenly. Uneven lug nuts can also warp the brake drums and rotors.
