How to Start Making Friends in a New Place

Making friends is easy for children, but when you get older it can be hard to make friends in a new place. Most people are concerned about finding and keeping good friends. If you have young children, making new friends usually involves forming friendships with the parents of your children's friends. If your children are older, or you do not have children, you are on your own to make friends.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Think about the types of friends you would like to make. Most of us become friends with people that we feel are a lot like ourselves. Think about friends that you have had in the past. Look for people in your new area that are similar to yourself or similar to your other friends.

  2. Step 2

Consider what you would like to do with your new friends and then go out and do it by yourself. If you meet people and make friends while you are doing something you enjoy, you know your new friends like that activity. For example, if you want friends to go to bars with, go to a bar and make friends. On the other hand, if you want friends that are health conscious and active, go meet friends at a gym.

  3. Step 3

Join clubs, groups and organizations that fit your interests. Getting involved in your new community is a great way to meet people and make friends.

  4. Step 4

Let people know you are friendly and want to make friends by smiling when you see them, saying hello, and making eye contact. Be outgoing, personable and welcome friends into your life.

  5. Step 5

Host a back yard party. Welcome yourself to the community by throwing a party. Invite your neighbors, people you have come to smile and say hello to, and anyone else you can think of to invite.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always choose your friends wisely. Remember that not everyone knows how to be a good friend. Let friendships grow slowly and naturally.
