Moving big files over the web has always been a problem. Many servers simply can't handle the bandwidth. And then there is the issue of allowing site visitors to be able to send their big files directly to you. Luckily there's YouSendIt SiteDrop, which allows visitors to send big files without FTP or other complicated protocols and even notifies you when it's done.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Create a SiteDrop account. You can add it automatically with a new YouSendIt account, or add the feature from your current account page.
Step2
Begin basic set up. Select the SiteDrop tab on your account page. The first window will prompt you to add domain names of pages you want to embed and the URLs of page where visitors will be taken after they send their file ("Thank you," "Where would you like to go next?")
Step3
Customize your SiteDrop display features. The most important setting is the message your visitors should see. You can also choose to collect sender email, subject and message data. Set the display dimensions and background colors to match your site design or corporate brand.
Step4
Set notification options. SiteDrop can send you an email or notify your server. If you want to be notified by your server, SiteDrop will prompt you to provide a message protocol (XML or HTML Post), the site address and an alternate email address should delivery fail.
Step5
Click "Finish." SiteDrop will take you to a new window and generate a text field with the HTML code your web page will require. Preview the settings to make sure they suit your needs. Copy the code.
Step6
Paste the code into the site HTML file at the location where you want the SiteDrop object to appear. Refresh the page in your browser to make sure it works properly.
Step7
Test your SiteDrop object. Fill in the required information (email, subject and message) and load the file from your hard drive. A progress bar will keep track of the upload, and YouSendIt will return you to the account setup page.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also set preferences for how long a file can remain in your drop box. The default is 14 days, but you can choose to remove files after 30 minutes or leave them permanently.
