How to Expand Services in a Hair Salon

There is much more money to be had in a hair salon once you expand your services to include more than cutting and styling hair. But it isn't always easy to know which services you should include in your salon, and which services would be pointless. With market research and customer opinions, you can expand your hair salon and offer desirable services.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Talk to your customers and ask them what services they wish your salon offered. Research other hair salons in the area to find out which extra services they offer and which services aren't being met at any of the salons.
Step2
Focus your attention on a niche service, such as spray tanning or body wraps, and be one of the few hair salons that offer that service. This will increase your customer base for the extra service, and possibly get you new hair customers.
Step3
Hire employees who are willing to take classes for certification in nail care, massage, waxing or facials. Pay for their training and then set them up in the salon so that they can cut hair and offer extra services.
Step4
Sell products like nail treatments, accessories, hair products, facial products and home massage products. If possible, work with a local person who makes homemade scrubs, soaps and candles, and have them put together some gift baskets for sale in your salon.
Step5
Provide clients with the opportunity to try different employees. Since most people become loyal to one hair stylist, you risk losing business should you lose that stylist. But if a client likes one stylist, one nail technician and your masseuse, then you'll probably still keep that client, even if one of the technicians leaves your salon.
Step6
Consider expanding the storefront, if possible. Some services, such as waxing and massage, need their own rooms. If you feel you have a heavy money maker, then build on a couple small rooms, or buy more storefront space.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't add on every service you can think of at one time. This will leave you scrambling to find employees, and possibly turning clients away if you have no one that can provide those services.
