How to Wear a Bandana

Bandanas are one of the most versatile pieces of a person's wardrobe. They come in all colors, with hundreds of designs, and have been part of men and women's wardrobes since the sixteenth century. Check below for some known and not so well known ways to wear a bandana.

1. Fold the bandana in half diagonally making a triangle. Tie two ends behind the neck. The bandana can be worn loosely around the neck, pulled up to cover the nose and mouth (bandit outlaw style), or pulled up to the top of the head and flipped toward the back of the head for a loose kerchief look.

2. Match two bandanas with the same color and design. Lay the bandanas out flat with the front sides together. Create a shirt by sewing up the sides, leaving holes for arms, and sewing the top, leaving a head hole. Turn right side out and wear the shirt.

3. Make a skull cap by folding the bandana in half diagonally into a triangle. Put the long edge of the bandana on the forehead, placing it as high or as low as desired. Smooth the body of the triangle back over the hair with the point falling by the nape of the neck. Bring the ends of the bandana to the back of the head, overlapping the triangle tip. Tie the ends into a square knot. Tug on the point of the triangle to smooth out the ripples.

4. Wear the bandana as a headband. Fold the bandana in half diagonally into a triangular shape. Starting at the pointed tip, fold the bandana over 1 inch at a time toward the long edge. Place under the hair, bringing the ends up over the top of the head and tie. An alternative would be placing the headband around the forehead and tying at the top back of the head.
