In this article you will learn how to change the location of an existing Mozilla Thunderbird Email profile folder in Windows Vista. One of the nice features of the Thunderbird Email Client is that it gives you the flexibility to store your profile folder pretty much anywhere on your computer, networked computer, or other connected storage device that you have rights to use. Once you learn the steps this can be accomplished very quickly.

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Mozilla Thunderbird Installed on your computer.
Step1
The first thing to do is close your Thunderbird Email program if it is open. You will also need to make sure you have Windows Vista setup to show hidden files and folders.

Next you will need to locate your Thunderbird Email profile and copy it to the new desired location. To locate this profile folder go to: C:\ Users\ "Windows user name"\ AppData\ Roaming\ Thunderbird\ Profiles\ "Profile name"

The next step is to configure your Thunderbird Email program to point to the new profile folder location. More steps to follow...

The quickest way to do this is to open up the Windows Run command window. (To find the Run Command in Vista do a windows search and type in Run)

Run Command In the Run Command type in the following information below and then click on the OK button, this will bring up the Thunderbird Profile Manager:
thunderbird.exe -profilemanager

Create Button In the Thunderbird Profile Manager window click on the Create Profile Button.

After clicking on the Create Profile button you will see the Create Profile Wizard window appear. In this window click on the Next button.

In this window you will have an opportunity to enter in a new profile name. Then click on the Choose Folder button.

After clicking on the Choose folder button you will see a browse to folder window pop up. In this window you need to navigate to the copied profile folder location that you saved earlier and then press the OK button in this window.
Step10
Finally, click on the finish button located in the Create Profile Wizard window.

You should now be able to start up your Thunderbird Email program and access the new Profile location.
