How to Stuff a Sleeping Bag
For backpackers and hikers the bulkiest item in their gear is the sleeping bag. When loading a pack for a long trek or even a short one, minimizing the size of the sleeping bag is vital. They compress into a much smaller space and allow for easier storage and placement.

1
Spread the sleeping bag out on the ground and make sure the zipper is partially down on the side of the bag. This will allow the bag to spread and pack easier into the stuff sack. If you anticipate wet weather, line the inside of the stuff sack with a trash bag if the stuff sack is not waterproof.

2
Grasp the stuff sack with your hand and hold it open while using your toe to anchor the bottom of the stuff sack in place. You need to stabilize the stuff sack while you are stuffing the sleeping bag into it.

Start with the foot of the bag and stuff it all the way to the bottom of the stuff sack. Slowly feed the bag into the stuff sack and push it all the way down as you go. If you pack the bag loosely, it will be too hard to get the entire bag into the stuff sack and will be like a rock at one end. Remember that when packing your pack for hiking the idea is to pack it in a balanced manner.

Continue to push the sleeping bag into the stuff sack until it is all inside. Most stuff sacks have a cover that protects the end of the bag from dirt and moisture. Cover the end of the bag that is exposed, pull the drawstring tight on the stuff sack and tie it off.
