How to Make Homemade Meatballs and Gravy

How to Make Homemade Meatballs and Gravythumbnail
Alter the recipe by substituting ground pork or lamb for the beef.

Make a hearty meal with a Swedish meatball-inspired dish. Combine ground beef with seasonings and dense breadcrumbs to soak up a pan sauce made with flour, cream and broth. Serve the pairing over freshly cooked egg noodles. Add personal touches to this dish by changing out the ground meat, spice blends and broths used. Use artisan bread in place of the French bread for added flavor.

    Things You'll Need

    • 6 ounces (1/3 of a loaf) day-old French bread, torn into pieces
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • 1 onion, minced
    • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
    • 2 eggs
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 3 tablespoons butter
    • 1/4 cup flour
    • 3 cups beef broth
    • 1/4 cup heavy cream

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Tear up 6 ounces (1/3 of a loaf) of day-old French bread and place into a small bowl. Add in 1 cup milk, toss to coat and let sit. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add 1 minced onion and cook until translucent, 3 to 5 minutes. Remove from heat.

Put 1 1/2 pounds ground beef into a food processor. Add in 2 eggs, salt and pepper to taste, and 1/2 teaspoon each of dried parsley and garlic powder. Add in the cooked onions and the bread and milk mixture. Process until well combined. Form the meat into 1-inch round balls and place them on a cookie sheet. Bake for 30 minutes or until cooked through. Set the meatballs aside.

Melt 3 tablespoons of butter in the pan used to cook the onions. Add meatballs to pan and cook until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. Remove the meatballs. Add to the pan 1/4 cup flour, 3 cups beef broth and 1/4 cup heavy cream. Stir and cook until the liquids thicken into a gravy. Serve meatballs hot with the gravy poured on top.
