How to Take Basic Body Measurements for Sewing

Whether you're sewing clothing for yourself, your child or your spouse, you'll need to have the person's body measurements to ensure a perfect fit.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tailor's measuring tape
  • Notepad
  • Pen

    Women's, Girls' and Toddlers' Measurements

  1. Step 1

    Take the bust measurement by looping the measuring tape around the fullest part of the bust and straight across the back. Note the measurement (and the rest that follow) on your notepad.

  2. Step 2

    Measure around the body above the fullest part of the bust to take the chest measurement.

  3. Step 3

    Take the hip measurement by measuring around the fullest part of the hip.

  4. Step 4

    Loop the measuring tape around the body at the natural waistline (near the belly button) to take the waist measurement.

  5. Step 5

    Take the back waist length by measuring from the most prominent bone located at the base of the neck down to the natural waistline.

  6. Step 6

    Measure the height of your subject by having her stand against a wall without shoes and measuring from the top of her head to the floor.

  7. Men's and Boys' Measurements

  8. Step 1

    Take the neck band measurement by measuring around the base of the neck.

  9. Step 2

    Measure around the fullest part of the chest for the chest measurement.

  10. Step 3

    Loop the measuring tape around the body at the natural waistline (near the belly button) to take the waist measurement.

  11. Step 4

    Take the hip measurement by measuring around the fullest part of the hip.

  12. Step 5

    Measure the shirt sleeve by measuring from the base of the neck all the way down the arm to the wrist. Make sure your subject has his arm outstretched and slightly bent at the elbow when you take this measurement.

  13. Step 6

    Measure the height of your subject by having him stand against a wall without shoes on then measure from the top of his head to the floor.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be sure to hold the measuring tape snugly.
  • Make sure the measuring tape is straight.
