How to Get Mom to Get You Something You Really Want

When you want something new and don't have the funds to pay for it, your mom is probably the one person you ask for help. Whether you want a new car, a video game console or a pair of jeans, use these tactics when attempting to persuade her.

Instructions

    • 1

Explain why you need the item, listing practical reasons or ways that it will help you in school, with your job or around the house. Discuss how it can also save her time or benefit the entire family. The argument that you want something because your friends have it may make her resist getting it for you.

    • 2

Talk to her before you ask your father for something new or discuss the situation with both of them at the same time. Going behind your parent's back after the other says, "no" may anger them and jeopardize your chances of getting what you want.

    • 3

Get your mom involved in the selection process. If you want a new dress, for example, she'll probably enjoy shopping with you and giving you her input on the color and style.

    • 4

Discuss the reasons why you deserve the item. Point out how well you've been doing in school, how you do chores and help around the house without being reminded and how many hours a week you spend at your after school job.

    • 5

Acknowledge the cost of the item if it's expensive. Comparison shop for the best price before you approach your mom and offer to chip in. If you're asking for a computer, for example, tell her you'll pay for the software, accessories and monthly Internet fees if she'll buy the unit itself. If your birthday or Christmas is coming up, tell her you'll consider it one (or all) of your gifts.
